What is foosball?
Foosball (table football, or just 'foos') squeezes a football pitch onto a table: two goals, a heavy little ball, and eight rods of fixed players you spin, slide and slam. It rewards fast wrists, patient defense, and the nerve to shoot through a two-finger gap.
It is the definitive office and common-room game because a match fits in a coffee break, spectators can crowd the table, and the skill ceiling is far higher than it looks. The gulf between a casual spinner and someone with a practiced pull shot is roughly the gulf between gully cricket and a Test match.
Common rules
How it's played.
- Score by putting the ball in the opponent's goal with any of your figures.
- No spinning: a rod turned more than 360° before or after striking the ball is a foul almost everywhere the game is played seriously.
- Serve through the hole at the table's side, or drop the ball at the centre; convention is to serve to yourself and play advantage.
- A dead ball (out of everyone's reach) is re-served from where play started.
- Jarring or lifting the table to disturb play is a foul.
- In doubles, each player controls two rods - usually split as defense (goalie + 2-bar) and attack (5-bar + 3-bar).
Scoring
How it's counted.
- Every goal is one point, no matter which rod scores it.
- Competitive play usually races to 5 in a best-of series; casual tables commonly play a single game to 8 or 10.
- Own goals count for the opponent - including the infamous back-pin slip from your own 2-bar.
- Some house rules make specific shots worth extra or ban goalie-to-goal scoring; agree before kickoff.

One player runs all four rods. More running, purer dueling; the format most pro tours rank on.
